should'nt this start AT THE BEGINING of the story ..?

It did. Maybe you read the 1990 version that replaced the original first chapter from 1953? "He had laboured to take men to the stars, and in the moment of success the stars--the aloof, indifferent stars--had come to him." I must have read this book ten times when I was a kid, yet Clarke's prose still gives me chills. Amazing man.

Karellen page quotes[edit]

I added quotations that were in Wikipedia’s article on Karellen before it was merged into the Childhood’s End article. Reordering of the quotations probably needs to be done to make them generally in the order that they appear in the novel. Perhaps divisions such as ‘Earth and the Overlords’, ‘The Golden Age’, and ‘The Last Generation’ like the ones that were used in the Wikipedia article on Karellen can be used to break up the text a little more. Length of article[edit]

With extensive excerpts from all of Karellen's major speeches (lectures) this article includes over 4% of the book, which is well over the limits on quotations guideline. ~ Ningauble 17:46, 22 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

I have trimmed this to about 111 lines from a 222 page book. (1969 Ballantine paperback printing) ~ Ningauble 19:35, 27 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
