  • Intolerance is the natural concomitant of strong faith; tolerance grows only when faith loses certainty... certainty is murderous.
  • The tolerance of liberty can be maintained until complete federal and state control by Catholics has been accomplished.
  • What is tolerance? It is the consequence of humanity. We are all formed of frailty and error; let us pardon reciprocally each other's folly - that is the first law of nature.

Requiring clarification[edit]

  • The King allows such freedom that every man may come and go and live according to his own creed, without suffering any annoyance and without enquiry whether he is a Christian, ‘Jew’ Moor or Heathen. Great equity and justice is observed to all, not only by the rulers, but by the people one to another.
    • About freedom of religion in the Vijayanagara empire. Duarte Barbosa quoted from Jain, M. (editor) (2011). The India they saw: Foreign accounts. New Delhi: Ocean Books. Volume III Chapter 12

The quote is about how a 16h century travel writer defined or described Freedom of religion. The famous Vijayanagara empire was unusually liberal for its time.

Since most quotes on such theme pages are often very recent, a quote from the 16th century helps in diversifying the quotes.

But if you think the quote is not appropriate enough for this page so be it. Thanks for copying it to the talkpage. -- (talk) 09:55, 19 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

The quote is fine, but the citation needs some work and I was too lazy to do it myself Ficaia (talk) 11:01, 19 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
